Sore nipples
- Your nipples firstly need to get used to the new demands. This is best achieved by feeding your baby regularly but not too frequently.
- What you should avoid is making the nipples harder prior to nursing. Rubbing them vigorously, as was recommended in the past, only irritates the sensitive skin even more.
- What is important is to ensure that your baby latches on properly. And do not let your baby suck at your breast too long after feeding, as this only puts unnecessary strain on your nipples.
- Always begin with the less sore side and remove your baby from the breast using the “little finger method”.
- After nursing, cover your nipples with a few drops of breast milk and let them dry in the air ‒ you will be amazed at the healing effect of the milk!
- Sprinkle your nipples with dextrose powder after nursing.
- In addition, you should also sometimes avoid covering up your breasts and instead go “topless” at home (your partner will enjoy this!) ‒ or you can wear a loose top without a bra underneath. Plenty of fresh air does your nipples good at this time.
