If you decide to have your baby at home, you need to be completely healthy at the time of the birth and your baby needs to have shown signs of normal development up to that point. Prenatal care should have verified that there is no reason to assume there will be any complications during the birth.
Naturally, complications may of course arise unexpectedly once birth is underway, even if the conditions at the outset were favourable. In some cases, the expectant mother or the new mother and baby will need to be taken into hospital after all. The journey to the hosptial should not take longer than 15 minutes.
It is probably for this reason that only a few women opt for a home birth.
However, if you are sure that this type of birth is the right one for you and your partner, the comfort of your own home certainly has advantages.
A home birth needs to be planned carefully. It is important that an experienced midwife is there to support you. Also remember to organize someone to help with the household and looking after your other children, if you have any.
